“I pledge my support to people struggling with loneliness and high rent costs by urging the government to consider adopting Trevor Lyttleton MBE’s plan to ‘Help Young and Old and Save Millions’. I will work to ensure the Government goes further to tackle elderly isolation and with rising rents.”
What is Trevor Lyttleton’s plan to ‘Help Young and Old and Save Millions’?
‘Help Young and Old and Save Millions’ is a cross-party effort that involves urging the Government to introduce a targeted tax incentive to enable older homeowners, with spare rooms, to affordably let to younger renters.
The measure would bring spare unused rooms into use, support younger renters, reduce loneliness among the elderly, and ultimately ease pressure on our public services.
The proposal has attracted widespread recognition. The Sunday Express endorsed it as a measure that could ’save millions’, Former Prime Minister David Cameron described it as ‘innovative’ and Matthew Parris, writing in The Times, concluded that it should be adopted.
