Grammy Nomination (1980)
Although not the first lawyer with music in a Broadway show (Cole Porter and Arthur Schwartz and A P Herbert got there first!) Trevor was the first English Solicitor to do so.
In 1980 Trevor shared a GRAMMY nomination for music in the Broadway hit musical ‘A DAY IN HOLLYWOOD/A NIGHT IN THE UKRAINE’ with Frank Lazarus and ‘Hello Dolly’ composer Jerry Herman

We celebrated the Broadway opening night of A Day in Hollywood/ A Night in the Ukraine at Sardi’s on receiving Grammy nominations, 6 Tony nominations, and, true to form (on the principle that ‘where there’s a hit there’s a writ’) a lawsuit from the Marx Brothers’ Estate seeking an injunction claiming infringement of their rights to the likeness of Groucho Chico and Harpo Marx. This prompted Dick Vosburgh to declare: “In 10 years time they’ll say: ‘It was a wonderful lawsuit. What was the show?’”
Sure enough the lawsuit (handled by US lawyers) outlasted the show that ran on Broadway for two and a half years.
The Marx Brothers Estate filed its tenuous claim in New York, based on a Los Angeles case where the heirs of Bela Lugosi – the star of Dracula films – claimed the sole rights to perform as Dracula. The Judge rejected this, ruling there was no right to the likeness of a fictitious character like Dracula. However in an obiter dictum (a non-binding remark), he suggested there might be a claim if it were a real person like Groucho Marx.
Our Counsel won the case on appeal pleading the Freedom of Speech First Amendment defence and that, if we lost it would mean:
The Marx Bros Estate’s defeat left vaudeville and mimics intact for our continued enjoyment.
I’m not sure what was more entertaining the show or the lawsuit!
EAST MEETS WEST
Frances Yip’s Chinese version of my song SING SING A HAPPY SONG reached the Hong Kong charts in 1974.
I wrote the original English lyrics as a clarion call for young volunteers to help the old and change the world (see song and lyrics below)
SING SING A HAPPY SONG
Words and Music: Trevor Lyttleton
Sing, sing a happy song, a happy song of love.
Sing as we swing along to the world we’re dreaming of.
Where the poor are rich in the things that count,
And the old are young in heart.
Let’s sing, sing a song of love and make a brand new start.
Sing, sing a happy song and fill our hearts with joy.
Stop all the killing now and save each girl and boy.
For a brave new world where people care,
that no one can destroy.
Sing, sing a song of love for a world we can enjoy.

HONG MUSIC CAMP ASSOCIATION 1979
In 1979 the Hong Kong Government invited me to Hong Kong to draft the Hong Kong Music Camp Association’s constitution to encourage talented young musicians from all parts of South East Asia (apart from China) to perform together as an orchestra. It was a fascinating 2 month experience including a masterclass by Yehudi Menuhin who performed Mendelsohn’s Violin Concerto accompanied by gifted young musicians some of who had never played in an orchestra before
Before I left Hong Kong I presented Libby Wong the Music Administrator with a recording of my composition EAST MEETS WEST which interweaves Chinese and Western themes to encourage East/West relations.
I still live in hope!

KOREA
I first visited South Korea in November 1985 and had the pleasure, at the invitation of Director Kim Kang Seop, of conducting the Korean Broadcasting Orchestra in a performance of two of my works liveon TV on theSaturday Night.
“100 Minutes Show”
CHINA
In 1987 I was one of the first Western Composers to conclude a record deal with China Records in Beijing that brought my music themes to a huge audience in China.
